Maintenance Tips For Extending The Life Of Your Chainsaw

When it comes to outdoor power tools, a chainsaw can be one of the best to have on hand, especially if you have a wooded area on your property. You may not use your chainsaw to fell huge trees, but you may use a great deal to keep trees trimmed and to cut out large saplings. You chainsaw is a handy tool when it comes to clearing out wooded areas for enlarging your landscape or for simply cleaning up the area you already have arranged underneath large trees. Follow these tips for maintaining your chainsaw so it will last you through many seasons.

Fuel Considerations Before Storing Your Chainsaw

One mistake many people make when putting up their chainsaw until the next time they use it is leaving fuel in its tank. If you do not plan to use your chainsaw for a while when you store it, be sure to always drain the gas out of its tank, even if it is only a little amount. Gas contains a biofuel called ethanol that is capable of absorbing water from the air. For example, if you use your chainsaw to cut out a few areas of saplings and bramble, you do not have used all the gas. A half empty gas tank on chainsaw means the ethanol can absorb the water from the air in the tank and create a fuel that is contaminated. The next time you start your chainsaw, you will pull those contaminants through its engine, causing problems that require repairs or replacement with a new chainsaw. Always drain the gas out of your chainsaw before you store it.

Never Store Or Run A Dirty Chainsaw

Running your chainsaw over and over without taking the time to clean some parts of it can create engine and bar problems. For example, if you do not take the time to clean out small pieces of wood and other debris from the bar and chain, you could increase the risk of that debris coming loose and flying into you. Before you store your chainsaw, be sure to clean out the track. Washing the air filter is also a good idea so it will be ready to go the next time you use your saw. Be sure to let the air filter dry completely before putting back in your saw. You can wash the air filter in a mixture of dish detergent and water.

Maintaining your chainsaw can extend its life, allowing you the benefit of always having it when you run into a job that requires it. If you have ever used a bow saw to cut through a tree because you did, you will see why it is important to take care of it.
